CARL de MALMANCHE AGAINST RNZ AND NEWSHUB

Case Number: 3041

Council Meeting: MAY 2021

Decision: No Grounds to Proceed

Publication: Radio NZ

Ruling Categories: Balance, Lack Of
Politicians
Te Reo and reporting on Te Ao Maori
Unfair Coverage

Overview

Carl de Malmanche complained initially about two RNZ items headlined Judith Collins’ campaign against Maori systems won’t win votes – commentator andWeek in politics: Orewa recalled as Collins opposes ‘racist separation’.

A further complaint referred to a Newshub item headlined Sepuloni promises massive boost to Jobseeker benefit – but won’t say when.

His main concern relates to the topics of the reports – policies relating to Maori and whether they should get special consideration, policies he strongly disagrees with – rather than how they have been reported.

These are straightforward articles reporting on what politicians have said. Balancing comments from others were also reported.

There is nothing to suggest that the reporting in these articles is inaccurate, unfair or unbalanced. An article is not necessarily unbalanced because it does not include the full range of possible views. Neither is there any breach of other Media Council principles.

There are insufficient grounds for the complaint to proceed.

Finding: Insufficient Grounds to Proceed.
