DAVID O'BRIEN AGAINST THE SPINOFF

Case Number: 3043

Council Meeting: MAY 2021

Decision: No Grounds to Proceed

Publication: The Spinoff

Ruling Categories: Discrimination

Overview

David O’Brien complained against a television review published by The Spinoff on May 4, 2021. It was mainly about the reviewer’s irritation at the number of advertisements run through programmes screened by TVNZ on Demand. The reviewer briefly mentionedCreameries, a “post-apocalyptic thriller…that gets rid of all the world’s men” and adds as an aside “(btw, an excellent idea).”

Mr O’Brien said this was gender bashing and a breach of the Media Council’s discrimination and diversity principle.

An innocuous flippant line in a review is no grounds for complaint.

Finding: Insufficient Grounds to Proceed
